Seduce the Count’s Daughter’s Lover – Ch. 1-10

Chapter 1

I could feel the piercing, murderous intent.

It took every ounce of my strength to keep up the barrier, but before the approaching sword all my efforts were hopeless.

I could hear a bloody squelch, the sound of pierced skin, as the sword dug into me.

Another fail.

“Stand, Lady Lydel Cross.”

“Ugh… Hah…”

“And you call yourself the Empire’s best barrier sorcerer?”

“I… Urk- I apologize…”

My legs shook like that of a newborn fawn. In an attempt to stop the bleeding I gripped the wound on my arm, but to no avail. Despite my blood spilling out on the floor, the person standing before me seemed to show no signs of sympathy.

“Enough apologies. You could be spending that time creating a barrier strong enough to counter Strenger.”

His words were as empty and cold as his gaze.

“… Yes, Your Majesty.”

“I’ll look forward to tomorrow. Let’s go.”

“Yes.”

At the emperor’s behest, an accompanying sorcerer drew a magic circle on the ground. Graceful steps made their way to its center, a brilliant gold light spewing from the sigil as soon as he entered. Within a moment the light faded leaving behind nothing but an empty space.

With no one else left I made my way towards the cupboard. My legs trembled beneath me, threatening to give out as I tried to steady myself. With shaky hands I opened up the cupboard revealing a neatly displayed line of potion bottles.

I grabbed and drank a random bottle, immediately feeling it’s effects taking place as the wounds on my arm began to heal up.

Thank god. Nothing too bad happened today.

A brief wash of relief swept over me as I looked at the fully closed wound, healed as if it had never been there before. I dropped on the spot. My tears, which I thought had long dried up, began to fall again.

How did it come to this?

If I had simply lived out my life as the fourth daughter of a common knight, if I never found out I could use barrier magic at the age of 18, if my powers remained hidden this never would have happened.

I slowly lifted my head to stare at the already dimming world outside my window. The endless array of stars were much closer here than from the ground.

That was a given. This was the tower’s 150th floor. On top of being the tallest place in the Empire, it was also the place where the barrier began.

And the person responsible for putting up and maintaining that barrier was me.

As if being drawn by a magnet I slowly made my way towards the window.

The window of this small room I lived in was the only way I could get a glimpse of the world outside. Whenever I thought I would go insane from claustrophobia, I would look out the window upon the Empire and sooth myself.

That’s right. The reason the Empire can be so peaceful is thanks to my barrier. Because I’ve been working tirelessly on my barrier since I was 18, the Empire could be protected from enemy invasions.

That’s all I need.

I should be satisfied with that.

…But am I really?

“…Son of a bitch.”

My curses slipped through gritted teeth, but it didn’t matter. No matter how much I damned him nothing would change.

I let out a deep sigh and leaned against the wall before promptly sitting on the ground.

The fact that I have talent for barrier magic came to light when I turned eighteen. My poor father, delighted at the sight, sent me off to the Emperor where I was bestowed the title of ‘Lady’. At eighteen years of age, I had become the Empire’s youngest imperial sorcerer.

Back then I thought everything would be alright; I was recognized for my talents, my family was now affluent, and I worked right alongside the Emperor.

Of all the people I had seen, the Emperor was the most handsome man I had ever met. Despite being a mere 3 years older than me, he commanded the large Mutos Empire and found great interest in my barrier magic.

I won’t lie. His midnight black hair and blue eyes that seemed to sparkle like jewels drew me in.

You could even say that he was my first crush…

Of course now I would have strangled my past self for being so enamored with that bastard… But I can’t really blame her. His smile and voice seemed so warm and kind. On top of that, I was just a young eighteen year old girl from the countryside.

However, a year after leaving my family to move to the capital, I realised something was wrong.

“This is where you’ll be staying as of today.”

“…Um, are you sure there wasn’t some kind of mistake?”

The room I was to stay in was so shabby it allowed me to be bold enough to ask this question.

It was a small room with an attached washroom. Inside it was nothing but a bed and a desk with stone walls covering every cardinal direction.

For a girl who had just turned nineteen the place was awful. But that was just the beginning of my troubles.

“I’m giving you two orders you need to follow starting now.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“First, your title is given to you so that your powers can be used for the good of the Empire. The Kingdom of Azenda and the Deus Dukedom are both troublesome foes. I need you to put up a barrier that will keep them out.”

“…Forgive my impertinence, Your Majesty, but in order to keep the two countries out I would need to put up a barrier that covers the entirety of the empire.”

“Correct.”

A wide smile spread across the lovely Emperor’s face. His large, cold hand reached to pat my shoulder.

“The Empire is in your hands now, Lady Cross.”

“Y-Your Majesty?”

“In the case that you don’t follow my orders”

It was then that I saw just how quickly a person could change.

His once warm smile snapped into a menacing visage, comparable to that of a wolf or eagle. His eyes bore no emotions, cold and hard like ice.

“I’ll choose a random citizen and use them as an example.”

If he wanted to he could have just killed me. When I heard an innocent person would be sentenced to death in my place, all I could do was sit in silence.

It was then that I came to realise just how the Emperor was able to rule this giant Empire despite being only 22.

If they showed talent, he used them. If they lost their use, he would throw them away without hesitation. Anyone who objected to his tyrannical reign would be met with the sharp end of the sword sitting on his hip, smeared red with the blood of his victims.

‘That sword.’

I could handle being locked up in a magic tower at the age of 19. I could have handled maintaining a barrier for 10 years too.

But the thing that was truly unforgivable…

“Second, you will need to help me counter Strenger’s power.”

“By Strenger you mean…”

I’d heard the name before.

The magical sword, Strenger. It was a sword passed down through each emperor in the Muto Empire.

While it promised it’s owner victory and glory, those that couldn’t control it’s power would have to face the cost of having their life force sapped.

As a simple daughter of a lowly knight, I wasn’t sure why the name of an object so legendary was being mentioned here now.

“There’s nothing in this world Strenger can’t slice. But can your barrier withstand it?”

As his words trailed off he beamed.

I can remember that smile as clear as day. This was because shortly following that smile the Emperor drew his blade and cut my arm.

Though the attack was sudden, I was able to react quickly enough to put up a barrier around my arm. As a result, the cut that should have sliced my arm off clean left only a deep cut.

I wailed, having never experienced this kind of pain in my life. But the emperor’s face was indifferent as he tossed a potion in my direction.

“Does it hurt?”

“Urk…”

“If you dislike the pain then create the ultimate barrier that not even Strenger can pierce. This is your second order.”

Finished with his speech the Emperor stepped into the magic circle of a spatial sorcerer. Once surrounded by a field of light, the Emperor delivered one final word.

“I’ll be back tomorrow.”

For the next 10 years I was subject to the same repeating pattern. I would fail to put up a barrier, get stabbed by Strenger, and ultimately have to heal myself.

That alone would be enough to drive someone insane. But even without His Majesty here I got no rest.

Every day sorcerers of the tower would come with a new magic strengthening potion for me to drink. While the taste was godawful, what was even worse were it’s side effects.

Soon after drinking the potion the amplified magic power in my body would cause me to convulse. I would run a high fever, my eyes would roll into the back of my head, and my body would shiver with chills. Even so the Emperor never failed to come by with Strenger every day.

One would think after experiencing pain over and over again you would get accustomed to it, but the agony was always different. Even worse was having to maintain the barrier through the fear and pain.

It’s not as if suicide hadn’t crossed my mind.

Whenever I jumped from the tower I would end up back in my room in the safety of my bed. The sole way out, the window, seemed to be linked to my bed.

I tried purposely not drinking the potions. But before I could even allow myself to fall unconscious from excessive blood loss, the tower sorcerers would file into my room and force me to drink one.

I’ve even attempted taking Strenger’s hits without the use of a barrier. But just before the sword would pierce my heart the Emperor would stop his hand and look at me as though I was absurd. His cold eyes were so frightening I ended up instead acting like a fool and continued to take the abuse.

I spent 10 years unable to leave the tower despite my efforts. Even if I wished to die I couldn’t.

I stood up, swaying as I took myself to bed, shrinking down as I lay on it’s hard surface. My tears began to fall. Living was miserable.

Why was I born to be like this?

If I didn’t have this power I might have had a normal life, married a normal man, and raised a normal family. Relationships, love, marriage, these are all things I’ll never get to experience as I’ll spend the rest of my life locked up in this tower treated like a lab rat. I might as well already consider myself dead.

‘If only I could go back to that time.’

I closed my eyes thinking the same thought I’ve had a thousand times.

How great would it be if when I opened my eyes I was back to when I was eighteen.

Eighteen. If I could go back to when I first discovered my powers then I would never use magic. I would live discreetly so that I can die peacefully and quietly.

Just the thought made me happy. With a faint smile I slowly drifted off to sleep.

Then…

“Lydel, just how long are you going to sleep for?”

“…H-Huh?”

“Wake up! You’re going to be late!”

Absent-mindedly I sat myself up.

A small yet comfy bed, a bright sunny room, a voice telling me to wake up.

What’s this? A dream?

“Ah, right. This is for you. Happy birthday, Lydel.”

With a dazed look I took the bundle from their hands. Within the bundle I saw a refreshingly white apron neatly tied with a ribbon.

I lifted my head to look at the person before me.

“What’s with you? Were you that moved?”

A bright laugh burst from the girl’s mouth as she placed a hand on her hip.

Coral-colored hair and green eyes that are similar to mine. With small freckles dotting her warm face, there was no doubt about it. She was my oldest sister, Judy Cross.

“How long are you planning to be asleep for? Go wash your face and wake yourself up.”

Even as my sister left I stared blankly at the apron in my hands. This apron. I’ve seen it before.

Right. This is the apron I got from my sister on my eighteenth birthday-

“…Eighteen?”

That was when it hit me. I hurriedly jumped off my bed and ran to the mirror hanging in the corner of my room.

As soon as I saw myself in the mirror I froze.

“…Impossible.”

A white nightgown, coral hair braided into one, and cheeks still plump with baby fat.

Unable to believe what I saw I rammed my head into a nearby wall.

The sudden shock and impact caused my head to spin.

“Ow…”

I held back a groan as I rubbed my head. God that hurt.

But the pain I felt confirmed my suspicions.

This wasn’t a dream.

“I’m back…”

My eighteenth birthday. I had returned to the day I discovered my magical talents.

Chapter 2

I couldn’t believe it at first.

Of course I couldn’t. It was 10 years. 10 years that I spent locked up in that tower to be experimented on. So, when I turned 18 again, I spent nearly a month cooped up in my room.

I knew my family was worried, but I was scared.

If it was possible to suddenly come back 10 years in time, then the opposite also had to be true. Knowing that the possibility was there I couldn’t even be completely happy that I was back.

Despite my fears however, a month passed by safely with no changes to my situation.

The town would be quiet as always, and whenever I opened my eyes, I was always in my room. Sometimes the emperor’s face would appear in my dreams, but besides that nothing else happened.

I was feeling a little more confident after the month had passed so I sat down to really think about my situation.

One, I reverted back to the time before everything happened.

The emperor lived in the capital and I was in the countryside of Belma, a town along the Empire’s borders. As long as my powers were kept hidden, I would be able to live quietly.

Two, my powers right now were equal to the time before I jumped back.

My barrier had gotten stronger over the 10 years I spent getting abused by the emperor. On top of being able to manipulate its form and strength, it was also able to counter some of Strenger’s power.

If I had stayed and kept it up a little longer, then my barrier may have even developed the power to fully counter Strenger. Of course, I kept this a secret from the emperor.

Considering these two conditions there was really only one thing I could do.

“You’re the new maid?”

“Yes. My name is Lydel Cross. I look forward to working with you!”

I flashed a bright smile and bowed. The head maid gave me a careful look over before giving a nod of affirmation.

I could feel a nervous sweat as I gave her a shy smile.

For a common, single girl from the countryside, there were many ways in which I could live quietly. Of those possibilities, I chose to work as a maid for the nobility.

Working as a maid was a competitive and popular occupation for girls around my age. The only reason I was able to get a job as one was because my employer, Count Stingers, was a rather peculiar noble.

‘The Villainous Noble.’

This was what people around Count Stingers referred to him as.

There was no end to the number of rumours surrounding the Count. Stuff like hosting back-alley prostitutes and harbouring thugs, owning casinos and being a loan shark, stealing goods and even trafficking drugs were just some of the things they would say about him. It was obvious that most people would be hesitant and avoid working at a place with these rumours flying around.

In my case however, this was a positive. If there were already less people working in the Stingers household, then that would mean there were less opportunities for me to be spotted.

And so I began my life as a maid under the count. Despite my expectations, my life working there was surprisingly good.

The head maid, Ms. Maymore, though scary at first glance, was a surprisingly kind individual. The work I was given to do wasn’t as tough as I thought it would be either.

I was fed good food, I was paid, and the place I slept in was comfortable. On top of that, so long as I finished my tasks as I was assigned, I was allowed to end my day early.

Compared to my past life, my current days were happy and peaceful. It was just when I was starting to get comfortable that ‘that day’ came.

“Alright, pick up the speed everyone! Let’s go!”

Ms. Maymore seemed to be especially busy on the morning of ‘that day’. The other servants also seemed to hurry about more than they usually did.

“Eris, what’s going on?”

“Oh, you don’t know Lydel?”

As I whispered my question, my colleague, Eris’s, eyes grew wide.

“Today’s the day the young lady comes home!”

“The young lady…?”

“Yes, the count’s sole successor, Lady Milena Stingers.”

Now that I thought about it, I recalled something like that.

The current head of the Stingers household was Blaine Stingers, a middle-aged man reaching his late 40s.

He had no sons to speak of and had just his precious daughter. However, by the time I arrived the young lady was already gone on her trip so I had no chance to see her.

“How long was she gone?”

“Two months. Hehe, I might even be able to see Sir Graham today!”

“…Sir Graham?”

I blinked at the unfamiliar name. I thought the count only had a daughter?

With slightly flushed cheeks, Eris’ eyes sparkled.

“You wouldn’t know him since he went with the young lady on her trip. He’s the household’s butler. Even though he’s still young he’s incredibly capable and talented. On top of that…”

Eris’s voice dropped to a hush like she was about to reveal a big secret.

“He’s super good looking!”

“Ah… I see…”

I slowly nodded my head.

Were it my past self just hearing that he was handsome would have my heart beat faster, but now I didn’t particularly feel anything.

Just how handsome could a supposed ‘good looking guy’ from the countryside really be? Besides, the last handsome guy I came across turned out to have the most rotten personality.

Still, knowing that the butler was a capable person came as a relief. This wasn’t to say that Ms. Maymore lacked any skills as the head maid. But no matter how competent the head maid was, if the butler was lacking then any work would start to become difficult.

“But shouldn’t the one to accompany the young lady be the head maid? The young lady is single, isn’t she? So why is… the butler accompanying her?”

I already forgot his name. I mumbled out my words to hide that I couldn’t remember, but it didn’t seem like Eris noticed.

“Well, you see…”

-Ding!

“Yes, coming!”

Just as Eris was about to say something the clear sound of a bell rang out and Ms. Maymore shot out the door like an arrow. Seeing as she moved so quickly it was most likely that the young lady’s carriage had arrived.

Eris paused her train of thought and pressed her nose straight to the window. Unlike Eris, whose gray eyes sparkled as she looked out the window, I went straight back to cleaning.

It wasn’t as if I would die if I didn’t see the young lady today. Besides, I was more concerned over finishing my work early and getting some more sleep.

But Eris had other thoughts.

“Oh, they’re here! They’re here!”

“Yes, yes.”

“Kya! It’s Graham! Lydel, look over there!”

I felt a brief tug on my wrist as Eris suddenly grabbed me and pushed me in front of the window.

I blinked a bit, needing a moment to adjust. I saw as someone walked outside out of a very large and extravagant carriage.

The first thing I noticed was their tall and slender figure.

I couldn’t see much since it was just his backside, but just from the way his shirt hugged his body he gave off an aura of cleanliness and sophistication. It was most likely that his shirt, vest, and jacket were neatly buttoned up in the front.

His hair looked as dark as night in the bright light of day as it swayed gently in the breeze. It looked so soft by the way it flowed in the wind, it made me want to reach out and touch it.

…I’ve seen hair like this somewhere before.

I scoffed at the thought. That wasn’t possible. That person could never come to the countryside.

When the young lady stepped out from the carriage I was struck with awe.

Her hair, a light purple hue like that of lavenders blooming in a field, was long and fell down to her waist. Her skin was so clear it looked as though it had been carved from white jade, and her eyes were a clear aqua.

Her shoulders, slender like an orchid blooming on a cliff, were nestled in the arms of the butler as if that was where they should be.

…Nestled?

I continued to watch with my mouth ajar. I could hear a sigh come from Eris beside me.

“It’s well known that those two have an intimate relationship. They say that they don’t, but don’t you think they look so good together?”

Yes, they did. They did but that wasn’t the issue here!

Without realising I had my nose pressed to the window.

“The Master doesn’t like it when the young lady is with Graham, but I hope that the two of them are able to stay together.”

With the young lady in his arms, he cut across the yard and came towards the household. Step by step they approached. And with each step my heart beat a little faster.

Dark, midnight black hair like the night sky. A cold cut nose and jawline, as if it was carved straight from a glacier. Cleanly shaped eyebrows and blush red lips. And…

Graham stopped in his steps and turned in my direction. I immediately dropped to the ground, hiding myself from the window.

“What’s wrong?”

“…Sorry. It just felt like someone was looking at me…”

I heard as the young lady asked whether Graham was alright since he suddenly stopped. After hearing his voice respond in reply, I was certain.

That face, that voice. There was no way I could forget.

The butler, Graham, was exactly the same as the emperor from my past life.

Before I could find out how this came to be I already decided to write my resignation. Why he came, what he came for nor how, I didn’t care even if I didn’t have the answers. I simply didn’t want to be tangled up with the emperor again.

10 years.

I’ve had enough of sticking around the person who squeezed everything I had out of me for 10 years. I would rather live off of weeds than associate with him again.

I would rather die than work with the emperor. Keeping that resolve in my mind, I stood before Ms. Maymore’s room.

I took a deep breath and confirmed again the contents of the envelope in hand. Then knocked on the door.

“Come in.”

“Pardon the intru-”

I opened the door and froze, making eye contact with the person drinking tea with Ms. Maymore.

Graham went to set down his teacup before turning his head slightly to look at me.

Speak of the devil!

“Lydel? What’s wrong?”

“Uh, um…”

My tongue was tied. Anything I tried to say crumbled before it could be said. It was very unlike me.

I broke into a cold sweat. Seeing my anxious gaze Ms. Maymore questioned me.

“Lydel?”

“I-It seems like you have a guest. I’ll, uh… I’ll come back some other time!”

I tried to smile as naturally as possible despite how stiff my words were.

Get a hold of yourself, Lydel! That person doesn’t know who you are! Be natural, natural!

But no matter how much I tried to tell myself, I just couldn’t get used to that face. I swiftly turned my back to them wanting to leave immediately.

“Wait.”

His word was low and quiet, but I couldn’t ignore it. I froze, turning my head ever so slowly in his direction. With his eyes still on me he asked Ms. Maymore.

“I’ve never seen her before.”

“Ah, this is the first time you’re seeing her, Graham. She’s a girl we hired while the young lady was on her trip. Her name’s Lydel Cross. Lydel, come closer.”

It was like I had just received the orders for my execution.

But it wasn’t as if I could simply ignore her requests so I begrudgingly dragged my feet towards them and approached as slow as I possibly could.

“This is Graham, the butler.”

“N-Nice to m-meet you.”

It wasn’t nice to meet him at all but I forced the words out of me anyways.

I turned my gaze down, waiting for Graham to tell me to leave. I could feel the cold sweat dripping down my back as I attempted to hide it.

But no matter how long I stood there Graham said nothing.

There was an odd silence in the room. Even so I could feel Graham’s eyes upon me.

All of a sudden Graham uncrossed his legs and stood in his spot.

“Lydel, you say?”

I raised my head in surprise at his unanticipated reaction and immediately regretted my decision.

As soon as I lifted my head Graham’s face was right in front of me. My mind went blank under his scrupulous gaze.

I couldn’t breathe.

Frozen in place, the most I could do was be subject to his searching gaze.

All of a sudden Graham put his hand in his breast pocket. The small movement surprised me and I squeezed my eyes shut.

What is it? What is he going to do? Is he going to pull Strenger from his pocket and slice my arm? Do I need to run?

“Here.”

“No!”

Alarmed by his voice my eyes flew open.

And in his outstretched hand I noticed a white handkerchief.

Chapter 3

“Lydel, what’s wrong?”

I could hear Ms. Maymore’s concerned voice calling out to me, but right now I was focused on another problem.

Graham’s face, as expressionless as when he handed me the handkerchief, continued to look at me.

As I stared blankly back, he eventually opened his mouth to speak.

“Are you alright?”

“…Pardon me?”

“You’ve been sweating for a while now.”

That was when I noticed the sweaty strands of hair sticking to my forehead. It looks like I was more nervous than I thought.

“Th… Thank you.”

I took hold of Graham’s handkerchief like I was possessed by something, but I didn’t dare think to use it to wipe my forehead.

As I mindlessly stared down at the handkerchief, Graham promptly turned to face Ms. Maymore. Even though my conscious wasn’t fully there I could clearly hear his voice.

“Let her rest until tomorrow. I will take care of her sick leave.”

“Alright.”

Following her rigid response, Graham gave her a brief nod to indicate his business was finished, and then left the room.

As soon as I heard the soft click of the door I realised something.

“Are you feeling sick, Lydel?”

“Purple?”

Ms. Maymore seemed taken aback and tried asking again, but all I did was blink as if I had just woken up. If I didn’t see wrong, then it was clearly different.

“Ma’am, about Sir Graham…”

The head maid’s face quickly turned from worry to discontent. Just looking at her expression I knew exactly what she was thinking. Most likely, all the maids who worked at this estate had fallen head over heels for Graham at some point.

“How long have his eyes been purple?”

That was it.

I couldn’t tell from far away, but now that I saw him up close, I was certain.

The emperor I remembered had blue, sapphire-like eyes. They were deep and cold, like the depths of the ocean or the winter sky. A chilling blue.

How could I possibly forget the heartless blue eyes that looked at me as if I was Strenger’s sheath?

But Graham’s were different. The eyes that met mine while extending the handkerchief were a clear, vibrant purple.

I couldn’t think of a reason as to how this could happen. Why would someone’s eye colour change like that?

Of course, with the help of a transformation sorcerer or a magic tool, it would be possible. But if the emperor was willing to change his eye colour, was there some reason he chose to come and work in the countryside as a butler?

“Well, I’m sure they’ve been purple since birth.”

Ms. Maymore answered stiffly. I’m sure it seemed like an odd question, but it was one that was important to me.

“Then, how long has Sir Graham been working here?”

“Why do you ask?” Ms. Maymore asked me sharply.

To be fair, I’m sure it was getting tiring having to answer other maids’ questions regarding Graham. If the new maid also contributed to that, I’m sure it would be annoying.

“Because he looks similar to the emperor.”

“…His Majesty? Graham does?”

Ms. Maymore blinked and stared at me before her lips pulled into a slight grin of disbelief.

“And just when did you meet His Majesty?”

“…”

Ah, right. I haven’t visited the capital this time, have I? I forgot this basic point in my flustered state.

“I haven’t seen him directly. Just a portrait drawn by an artist from the capital.”

I panicked a little, but I somehow managed to make a bluff. Thankfully, it didn’t seem as if Ms. Maymore thought too deeply about my answer.

“You shouldn’t put so much trust into an artist’s painting if you haven’t seen him in person. That would be an offense to Graham as well.”

“…I’m sorry.”

I swiftly lowered my head and left the room. My head was full with a cluster of thoughts. I couldn’t even remember how I ended up back in my room.

Once I calmed down, I sat down on my bed and began to think about this strange incident.

If Graham didn’t use magic to change his eyes, that meant that Graham and the emperor were, undoubtedly, two different people.

Even so, they were eerily similar. The two looked so alike, and yet I found it strange that the count and servants said nothing about it.

Of course, the servants here have never left the estate, never mind gone near the capital. How would they know that Graham and the emperor looked the same? However the count, as a member of the nobility, had no reason not to notice it.

No matter how deep in the countryside and near the border we were, the count was a designated noble. It wouldn’t be strange to say he’s seen the emperor’s face before. Even if he hadn’t, any nobles who came to see him must have recognised Graham’s face.

“…”

Something didn’t feel right.

There was something else. I didn’t know what it could be, but I was certain it wouldn’t be good for me.

If that was the case, the thing I needed to do now was lay low and act as if I’m dead.

Even if I handed in my resignation letter right now, it was most likely that Ms. Maymore would hold onto me until she could find a replacement. Like I mentioned before, Count Stingers was considered a ‘villainous noble’. There was no telling when a replacement would arrive.

If I had to stay at the estate anyways, then the next best thing to do was to not get involved in anything with Graham.

Delving into Count Stingers’ relationships or investigating Graham were unnecessary. Even if I didn’t know the details, it doesn’t affect what I need to do. If it ever became dangerous, then my barrier magic would shine.

After reaching this conclusion, I stood up from my bed to get changed. The moment I got up something light and soft fluttered to the ground.

I subconsciously looked to the ground and found myself unable to tear my eyes away.

Neatly laid out on the ground was a white, linen, handkerchief.

“…This time.”

My eyes narrowed as I glared at the handkerchief. I gently grabbed it with my fingers and put it into the bedside drawer. As the drawer shut with a soft click, I muttered to myself.

“I won’t let it happen as you want.”

Yes. Not this time.

Following that day, I hardly ever ran into Graham.

It wasn’t as if I was purposely avoiding him.

While my work was in the hall on the 1st floor, Graham, who tended to Miss Milena, dwelled near her room which lay on the 3rd floor. There wasn’t much reason for us to run into each other in the first place.

Since we both worked in the same mansion, it wasn’t as if I never ran into Graham. Whenever I did come across him, I would move quickly to act like I had a lot of work to do in order to shorten the time I interacted with Graham as much as possible.

Although I did have a lot of work to do.

Ms. Maymore, on the other hand, seemed to be rather pleased with it.

Whenever I caught her watching me, her expression always seemed to be refreshed by the fact that there was a maid who wouldn’t take their eyes off their work to look at Graham.

A week went along in this fashion, and I began to develop hope that I could live a safe and peaceful maid life again.

Graham was always with Miss Milena. The young lady too, always kept him by her side. Even though they never said it, anyone who saw them would say they looked like a picture perfect couple.

As long as Graham was with Miss Milena, I had no reason to get involved with Graham.

A butler and a noble’s prestigious daughter; a forbidden love no matter how you looked at it. But, as I began to wipe the windows, I begged, prayed, wished, that the two would undoubtedly stay together.

But it seemed like not everyone had the same thought.

“Lydel, a moment.”

Just as I started to clean my sixth window, Ms. Maymore called my name. I turned to look at her.

“Yes, ma’am?”

“Follow me for a moment. I have something to speak with you about.”

“Oh…”

I anxiously looked back and forth between the head maid and the window.

The head maid was someone who rarely talked while working. If she called me out despite that then it must be an urgent matter. No matter how much I thought about it though, I couldn’t figure what exactly she might need that she needed to pull me away from my work.

“But I still haven’t finished…”

“That’s alright. Just come.”

Monkey see, monkey do.

Unable to give in to Ms. Maymore’s charisma, I dropped my rag and followed after her.

I followed her up to the 2nd floor. After walking through a long corridor, we arrived before a large door. Ms. Maymore lifted her hand and gave it a short knock.

“Come in.”

From inside, a low, sinking voice called out.

As soon as I heard the voice I was confused. If I heard correctly then that voice just now was the voice of the estate’s owner, Count Stingers.

What was it? Why would the count want to meet with a humble maid like me? Did I make some kind of big mistake? If not, was this the common situation where a noble wanted to spend the night with a young, virgin maid? No, even if that was the case I haven’t done anything to warrant the count’s gaze.

“Come in, Lydel.”

I heard Ms. Maymore’s voice while in my daze. When I looked she was already halfway through the door.

Ah, shoot. This had already become a situation where I had no choice in the matter.

I was frustrated, but I wasn’t desperate.

I am the Empire’s greatest barrier sorcerer. Putting a barrier around myself so that no one could touch me was no work at all.

With a deep breath I slowly followed the head maid into the room. The click of the door shutting behind me seemed to be particularly loud.

“I’ve brought her, master.”

“Ah, this is her?”

Count Stingers, the estate’s head, sat behind a large desk, busily writing something, before lifting his head.

When I first saw Count Stingers, whom I had only ever heard about, I was a little taken aback.

His figure was large, like that of a bear, with wide, broad shoulders. His face was tanned and he had scars cut across his cheek.

Above everything, his eyes bore the look of someone who would kill another if they went against his wishes. They didn’t resemble a noble at all.

I understood then why he was dubbed the ‘villainous noble’. There was no other explanation for that face other than villainous!

“Come closer.”

I took a deep breath and came forward since it seemed like I’d be killed if I didn’t approach him right away.

I stood in front of his desk and the count looked me over with interest. Although I was overwhelmed by his size, I took the courage to look directly at the count.

No matter how terrifying the count was, compared with the emperor’s cold eyes and Strenger’s bloodlust, this was manageable. As I met his gaze, his eyes narrowed.

His gaze was tenacious, but they didn’t seem to hide any bad intentions or ulterior motives. Seeing that I was a little puzzled.

His honest look didn’t seem interested in making me a mistress, but it still looked like he was curious about something.

What did he call me for?

“Your name?”

“Lydel Cross.”

“I heard about you from Ms. Maymore. She says you’re an earnest and hard worker. If she’s the one saying so then it must be true.”

“Thank you very much.”

“So I have something to ask of you.”

The inevitable has come.

I nodded deliberately to hide my agitation. I wanted to avoid showing a weak appearance no matter what his request might be.

“And what would that be?”

“Ah, it’s nothing too difficult. I just…”

The count crossed his arms in deep thought. His frown just added more to his already scary face.

Thinking about what kind of thought would make him frown like that made me nervous.

The count pondered for a moment or two then let out a sigh. With a visibly uncomfortable expression, he clicked his tongue.

“Would like you to seduce Graham.”

Yes, I could see how having to seduce Graham could be an uncomfortable thought-

…What?

Chapter 4

Did I hear that wrong? He wanted me to do what to whom?

“… E-excuse me master but I believe I didn’t hear correctly. Would you please repeat yourself?”

“I said I would like you to seduce Graham, Lydel Cross.”

Count Stingers was generous enough to repeat himself for a lowly maid, but that generosity didn’t come as a pleasure.

It wasn’t simply going to talk with the person I hate. What? He wanted what?

“Um, master. Pardon me again but… I have no interest in Sir Graham.”

It was inconceivable that a low class maid, whose only job is to clean the mansion’s hallways, would speak back to the count, but it was all I could do.

It would have been better to become the count’s mistress. No, it’s not like I really want to become his lover. But seducing Graham? Sir count, isn’t that too harsh?!

“I am correct in my statement, right master?”

“You’re right. It’s perfect.”

However, the count’s reaction to my rude remark was, surprisingly, one of satisfaction.

As a maid, daring to speak against the master was a violation bad enough to get kicked out of the estate, but why did he look so pleased? Was this some kind of hobby of his? Something like getting a kick out of seeing people get rejected?

“I’m sure it’s strange to be told to seduce Graham. But because of some unavoidable issues, I’d like you to understand why I’m asking this of you.”

Leaving me shocked in place, the count continued to speak as he pleased.

“I’m sure you’re aware of the rumours floating around regarding Graham and Milena?”

“Oh, the two are…”

I quickly shut my mouth before I thoughtlessly replied.

Even if it was just a rumour, no father would be pleased to hear about their daughter being part of a scandal. The count, however, bitterly smiled as if he anticipated it.

“It’s natural rumours start flying around since they stick together that much. Even if part of the problem was I didn’t raise Milena right, the real problem is that butler!”

The atmosphere around the count suddenly shifted.

The dim eyes he had when talking about his daughter quickly turned to that of a demon that’s known to kill. He glared into empty space, as if Graham was standing right there.

“I hired him as a butler because Milena asked for it directly, but I don’t like him. I don’t know what sort of place he crawled out from but when I see him sticking to Milena like that, it makes me furious! Milena was pretty, kind, and ladylike before he came. Since he’s arrived they’ve gone out so often I rarely get to see my daughter’s face! She must have been possessed by that sly face. Our Milena was never this kind of child. Oh ho, honey, what do we do about our baby…”

“…”

Seeing that large, bear-like figure, clutching onto a portrait and crying over the desk made me slightly uncomfortable, so I turned away. Ms. Maymore casually pulled out a handkerchief from her pocket as if she was used to this scene.

He took the handkerchief and wiped away his tears. He let out a cough to clear his throat, coming back to his senses. Seeing him return to his previous expression with bloodshot eyes was less intimidating than before I saw this scene.

“Ahem. Because of this reason, I would like you to pull Graham away from my Milena.”

“… Would it be alright if I asked something?”

“What is it?”

“Why did you choose me?”

I carefully asked about the most important thing I was curious about.

Of all the maids in the estate, why did he choose me, the one who wants to be the furthest away from Graham?

I mean, it’s not as if I was ugly. This might be an empty brag, but I’ve heard more often than not how pretty my coral hair and clear, green eyes were. It’s because the emperor’s appearance was so prominent I didn’t stand out so much in the tower.

But if you compared me and Milena Stingers, the difference was huge. And by a lot.

Whenever I saw Lady Milena taking a stroll in the garden or riding her carriage, escorted by Graham, I would explode with, not inferiority, but fondness.

That soft atmosphere around her, as if she’d fall apart if her light purple hair simply brushed her. When the wind blew and fluttered her skirt, she had a mystical beauty that was unlike anything in this world.

To put it simply, Lady Milena was beautiful enough to even captivate a woman.

And beautiful things must be revered. Ah. Of course, excluding Graham.

But just why does the count think that I could beat out the young lady and seduce Graham?

“It’s because you don’t like Graham.”

“… Pardon me?”

What was he talking about?

“I hate to admit it, but even I can acknowledge that Graham’s an exceptionally good looking man. After hearing the things Ms. Maymore said, I’m aware the other maids adore him too.”

Yeah, so if you want to seduce him you should ask one of them. Why me?

… Is what I wanted to ask, but for now I shut my mouth and nodded.

“But if you want to seduce someone, you need to stand on equal ground. Who would be charmed by someone who clings to you without any reason but a pretty face? Well, if you’re beautiful enough, then maybe. But in this house you’d need beauty that surpasses Milena.”

“…”

Ow, that hurt.

“Which is why I decided on you. Out of everyone Ms. Maymore’s seen, she says you’re the only maid who busily worked even when Graham passed by.”

Ah, damn it. I should have just pretended I liked him.

“In the 2 years since Graham’s started working here, you’re the first maid to not fall for him. Which is why I’m asking you, please seduce-”

“Um, master.”

The count raised a brow.

That was a natural reaction. What kind of lowly maid dared to interrupt their master? It was an action usually frowned upon.

But I needed to say something. Even if I was chased out, even if I had to become a mistress, I just couldn’t seduce Graham.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t do it.”

“… What do you mean?”

The count frowned.

His face was intimidating enough that I felt like I would lose if he just hit me once, but after seeing the face of a loving father crying over his daughter, it had little effect on me.

If I spoke carefully the worst that would happen was I would get kicked out.

Hm, actually, wouldn’t that be better? In that case, I’ll go on the offensive.

“I don’t want to seduce someone I’m not interested in, and even if I tried I don’t think Graham would be fooled. On top of that…”

I would really like it if Lady Milena and Graham could live happily together for a long time. This is the hill I’ll die on.

… If I said that I think the count’s heart would be in danger. So I twisted my words the best that I could.

“Wouldn’t it be painful… For the young lady?”

Ms. Maymore let out a gasp and held her breath. The count opened his red, bloodshot eyes and glared at me silently as if he was going to kill me.

Ah, I think I’ve made a mistake.

I might actually be in danger.

Instinctively preparing a barrier, I waited for the count’s reaction.

All of a sudden the count slammed his desk and stood up. His desk was left with an imprint showing how hard he slammed it, but he approached me with long strides as if it didn’t phase him.

The count stood and looked down over my frozen self. His large, bear-like figure seemed even bigger when he was right in front of me.

The count, while looking down at me, slowly raised both hands. I readied my barrier to release it when the count suddenly grabbed my shoulders.

“I’m begging you!”

… Huh?

“I only have you! Please, pull him away from Milena! I’m begging you!”

“M-Master!”

The count’s large form was bent in half, deeply bowing towards me. In that moment I could see the premature grey hairs colouring the top of his head.

“Even if you do this…”

“I’ll pay you double your current salary!”

“… Pardon me?”

“Triple!”

“Um, m-master… Even if you do that…”

I flusteredly shook my head. I mean, no matter how much my salary was raised seducing Graham’s just…

At that moment the count suddenly raised his head and extended his hand, all five fingers spread out before me.

“Five times!”

“…”

I took a deep breath.

What kind of person did he take me for to think he would be able to resolve this with money? If he wanted to do that then…

“… What should I do first?”

… I would gladly accept.

“You’re the new lady’s maid?”

“Yes. I’m Lydel Cross.”

“Hmm.”

The ocean blue eyes that looked at me were filled with doubts. I tried to put on a smile while hiding my nervous sweat.

I was currently in the young lady’s room on the 3rd floor of the mansion.

Right in front of me was the lovely and fairy-like young lady who I had only seen from afar and…

“Isn’t it customary that the young lady chooses a lady’s maid herself?”

Graham, the main culprit of this whole fiasco.

Hello Sir Graham. I believe this is the first time I’ve seen you this close since meeting you in Ms. Maymore’s room.

Seeing him up close he looked even more similar to the emperor. Boohoo. If I could I would pull him away from the young lady’s side and just admire her.

“I’ve been selected and sent by the master. I’m sure I’ll be able to live up to your expectations.”

“By my father?”

Lady Milena tilted her head slightly and looked me up and down. It was a gaze that seemed to be more interested in me rather than scrutinizing.

That gaze resembled her father. The moment I thought so, Lady Milena laughed lightly.

“I’ll be in your care, Lydel.”

Wow, when a beauty says my name it really sounds different.

While I half absentmindedly stared at the young lady, I gave a blank nod.

“I look forward to serving you.”

“You can ask Graham if you have any questions. He’s the one who manages my schedule.”

Uh well, that’s.

As I began to hesitate, Ms. Maymore poked my arm while the young lady wasn’t paying attention.

Oh, right. I’m supposed to be seducing Graham.

“Then, miss. Allow us to excuse ourselves. Ms. Maymore, please take care of the young lady.”

Whether or not he noticed our sign, Graham asked in his usual stiff tone to be pardoned. As the young lady waved her hand like a painting, Graham turned to look my way.

I knew I couldn’t be like this, but as soon as I saw his face I could feel my stomach squirm and grew nauseous. The reason I was able to handle it was probably because his eyes were purple.

“Follow me. I’ll tell you what you need to do.”

My tongue froze making it difficult to respond, so I just closed my eyes and nodded.

No matter how much I thought about it, his face and voice were just too similar to the emperor. I felt sick enough I had to actively think about not throwing up, but if I didn’t look at his face it was bearable.

He’s not the emperor. Just someone who looks a bit like him.

Following his footsteps out the room, I muttered to myself over and over again that he wasn’t the emperor.

Yeah, he wasn’t the emperor and I had no reason to be locked up in the magic tower again.

“Since I look after most of the young lady’s tasks, you can be in charge of the dressing room. You can mend her clothes after she has gone out and the laundry can be taken out to the hallway in the evening.”

“…”

“… Are you listening?”

I was so engrossed in my thoughts I couldn’t hear what Graham was saying. It wasn’t until Graham stopped walking, wondering why there was no answer, that I realized what I had done.

“Ah yes, yes!”

“…”

As I responded in a flurry and looked up, I met with Graham’s cold, piercing eyes.

“That reminds me…”

Slowly he approached me. Step by step. Each step he took I could feel the blood drain from my head.

Finally he stood before me. As Graham’s eyes narrowed I reflexively closed my eyes.

“Is your body alright?”

Body?

Chapter 5

I opened my eyes, curious about just what he was talking about.

That was a mistake.

Graham was right in front of me.

He was looking at me with a vacant expression, one where I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. As soon as our eyes met I froze again.

Graham, his expression unchanged, raised his hand.

Slowly his hand began to approach me. My mind went blank and I broke out into another cold sweat.

Run. You need to run, Lydel. Right now!

As pitiful as it was, I never learned how to evade the emperor.

All I could do was close my eyes, holding back tears that threatened to fall, and wait for whatever pain was coming for me.

– Tap.

I felt as something cool touched my forehead.

My eyes opened at the unexpected contact. Facing Graham’s usual vacant expression, I froze for a different reason.

If I wasn’t wrong, it felt like Graham’s hand was on my forehead right now.

What? Why? Could it be that he was going to smack my head? Just like this?

Whether or not he was aware of the chaotic state of my mind, Graham continued to look at me.

“… You don’t have a fever.”

Graham muttered quietly, finally taking his hand off my forehead.

I blinked. I couldn’t believe it. But when I took what happened into consideration, it looked like Graham was checking to see if I had a fever!

“Are you still not well?”

“… Pardon?”

“It’s good to keep busy, but don’t push yourself.”

“… Yes.”

There was nothing I could do besides reply foolishly.

Despite my lame response Graham didn’t say a word. He simply turned and continued down the path he was heading before. I followed, staying a couple paces behind him.

For some reason I felt as if I had been incredibly rude to him.

Graham was undoubtedly a different person from the emperor.

Even if looking at his face triggered my trauma, it wasn’t as if that happened because he wanted it to. I had no reason to fear and ignore Graham because of it.

I took a peek at Graham’s back before letting out a deep sigh.

That’s right. If we’re going to take care of the young lady in the same mansion, I’ll be seeing him every day. I should start to recover from my trauma. I can’t shiver in fear whenever I see the emperor’s face forever.

“This is the dressing room. The door over there connects to the young lady’s bedroom so have her clothes and accessories prepared over there. There are clothes that need to be mended on that side. Make sure to have them done by tomorrow.”

The dressing room was filled to an enormous scale with clothes and shoes, befitting a count’s daughter, but I couldn’t find myself admiring them while I could hear Graham’s voice.

I knew it wasn’t him, but his voice also triggered the trauma I had from the emperor.

However, not wanting to do Graham, who had nothing to do with the emperor, anymore disrespect, I pushed my patience to its limit as I held back my triggering reaction.

“… Yeeup.”

I’m done for.

I could feel Graham stop and look at me after hearing my strange response.

This situation must be strange to whoever saw it. A maid who refuses to meet your eyes, doesn’t respond, only stares at the ground while breaking into a cold sweat, and when they do reply it sounds as if they bit their tongue; how couldn’t it be?

With a step forward Graham began to slowly come towards me, the clack of his heels seeming especially loud. As he got closer, I started to find it difficult to hold my head up.

“I-I’m sorry!”

But his approach didn’t stop.

As soon as his footsteps came close I closed my eyes again. My head knew he wasn’t the emperor, but my body seemed to think otherwise.

He’s genuinely trying to explain to me how to do my work. Am I going to get scolded for fooling around? Or maybe he’s going to insult me by calling me a useless tool?

Ahh. If anything, I wish he wouldn’t call me useless with that voice. If I heard that in the same tone I heard from the emperor daily, I might just faint on the spot.

Tap tap tap.

“…?”

Contrary to my worries Graham didn’t stop in front of me. Instead, he continued silently straight past me, walking quietly out the door.

“Haah…”

As soon as the door closed with a click, I let out a deep sigh, finally alone.

As soon as my nerves calmed down my legs bent and collapsed beneath me. I whined in a sulky manner on the ground, having been worried over nothing.

“Agh, that face! I can’t!”

Master, I’m finished.

Seduce Graham’. How am I supposed to ‘seduce Graham’ when I can’t even make eye contact with him? Never mind increasing my salary by five or even ten times, please just let me go back to a normal maid life.

Boohoo. He must be furious if he walked by me without a word. Or maybe he thought talking to me would be worthless and just left.

In my heart I felt like I had apologized to Graham over a hundred times. I wanted to say I didn’t mean anything I did, but just because I said so didn’t mean he was going to believe me.

I’m really sorry Graham, but I couldn’t help it. Try living locked up in a tower for 10 years and having your arm sliced up every day. Of course you’d get traumatised!

“I want to go home…”

I hugged my knees and buried my head, brooding over the thought I always had before coming back. If I knew I would be told to do this after coming back then I would never have become a maid.

Selling my soul for five times my salary was incredibly high.

Damn it. Even after coming back money’s the main perpetrator.

No. I still had hope.

Count Stingers told me to seduce him, but he said nothing about what would happen if Graham never fell for me.

In other words, even if Graham doesn’t fall for me that isn’t my fault.

In that case, all I needed to do was work hard to pretend to seduce Graham, receive my quintupled salary, and cheer for Lady Milena’s and Graham’s love to be fruitful from behind.

This is what you’d call a win-win situation. Although, the only person benefiting from it would be me.

Yeah, it’s fine. Everything will be okay.

I buried my feelings of wanting to cry and began to circulate positive thoughts. At least this was a lot better than the tower.

When I thought about being locked up on the 150th floor of the tower, I suddenly felt invigorated.

“… Let’s do some work.”

That’s right. If I thought about it, my situation now was much better than when I was in the tower. I didn’t have to face life threatening situations every day at least.

With my strength re-energized, I started to mend the dress Graham assigned me. I was so immersed in my thoughts however I failed to realise that I couldn’t hear Graham’s footsteps outside the door.

“Is something wrong?”

“… Hm?”

The question came from nowhere as Milena took a brush tipped with green paint to the canvas. Graham, standing next to her, wondered what she meant as he calmly opened his eyes.

Milena moved the brush around, dotting the face of the canvas, viridescent trees starting to bloom on its surface.

“You’re really quiet.”

“Ahh.”

Milena turned to look at Graham as he slowly nodded his head. Her shimmering, water-coloured eyes shone brilliantly, illuminating Graham.

Milena was not only beautiful but intelligent too. She continued to look at Graham until he opened his mouth to speak.

Graham spoke softly, lost in his thoughts.

“My face…”

Milena’s eyes widened.

What about his face? Did he fall in love with his own beauty?

“… Could you have a love-hate relationship with it?”

“Hah?”

What was he talking about?

Milena blinked in disbelief, but Graham continued to mutter, wearing a serious expression as he looked in a mirror.

“I guess you should respect one’s tastes…”

“Wait, wait. What are you talking about?”

“… She says she wants to go home because of my face.”

“Who did?”

Milena asked with a hint of annoyance in her tone, but Graham didn’t respond. She watched him for a moment before narrowing her eyes.

In the 2 years she’s been with Graham, this was the first time he had ever brought up the topic of his face by himself.

In that case, something must have happened recently that made Graham have this thought.

“You don’t mean that maid?”

Graham simply nodded his head, forgoing a reply.

Milena’s face stiffened slightly.

She knew Blaine Stingers didn’t see Graham favourably. She wasn’t sure about Lydel, but there had been multiple incidents where the count would send people to try and seduce Graham.

Of course, his plans failed every time. But this one was a little different.

At first, she wondered if Lydel was really sent to seduce Graham since she seemed so ordinary. Her unusual coral hair and elaborate features were certainly pretty, but her beauty wasn’t particularly outstanding. She also seemed genuine so she had let the thought go.

But now, because of something that ordinary maid said, Graham was concerned?

“What did she say her name was?”

“Lydel Cross.”

Milena started to think after his prompt response.

Eventually she lifted her head and began to move her brush again.

“Let’s watch over her for now. We don’t know what kind of person she is, after all.”

“…”

“Graham?”

“… Alright.”

Graham seemed to be reluctant in his reply and let out a sigh. Since he agreed to continue to watch Lydel however, Milena didn’t argue back.

As Graham watched over the completion of Milena’s piece, he fell into his thoughts again.

He already agreed to watch over Lydel because of Milena, but he still felt uneasy.

Agh, that face! I can’t!

Lydel had mentioned Graham’s ‘face’.

Knowing that people around the world had different tastes those words didn’t hurt him, but something else tugged at his mind.

Those eyes.

Her wavering gaze and unfocused pupils.

What he had felt there wasn’t hostility or contempt, but rather pure, genuine fear.

When they first met in Ms. Maymore’s room he thought she was just sick. But now that he knew how she truly felt, he couldn’t simply overlook the issue.

What was it about Graham’s face that struck that kind of fear in Lydel?

Just watch over her for now, huh…

Graham glanced out the window, catching a glimpse of the servant’s house in a separate building from the main estate.

“… Milena.”

“Hm?”

Graham’s hand grazed Milena’s ear even before she turned around. His hand stretched out next to her, reaching and picking up a bucket of yellow paint.

The paint container looked cute in his large hand as he slowly lifted it to the air. Then the bucket, which had reached Graham’s eye level, fell to the floor.

– Bam.

“Oh dear.”

Paint splattered instantly in every direction. Despite the room’s messy state, Graham casually tugged on the bell connecting to the lower floor.

“What are you doing?”

Milena asked amusingly, not the least bit surprised.

In any case, since the rope was pulled Lydel would be coming soon. She was intrigued by what Graham’s intentions were for calling Lydel.

“Your paint has run out so it needs to be refilled. ‘Miss’.”

Graham’s speech returned to that of a polite butler.

As she heard the sound of approaching footsteps already outside the room, Milena smiled as if she knew.

Chapter 6

I mindlessly sat inside the carriage, watching the changing scenery outside.

People. Grass. Trees. Buildings. More people.

The carriage had been moving for a while now but it showed no signs of slowing down.

This was the first time that I ever felt this small town of Belma was so large. I prayed we would reach our destination quickly and took a quick side glance into the carriage. As soon as I caught a hint of something black from the corner of my eye I swiftly turned my gaze back outside.

Boohoo. I was hoping that maybe this was a dream, but as expected, this was real life.

The main perpetrator, the one who was making the usually small Belma feel as large as the palace, was sitting next to me.

A handsome culprit, perfectly dressed in a suit that fit his slender body; shirt, vest, jacket, and all.

“… Phew.”

I let out a small sigh without Graham’s knowing, thinking again about how I was put into this position.

To recap, this all started after dinner yesterday.

As I was about to head back after finishing my daily tasks, I heard the young lady’s summons and went to her room to come across an utter mess.

Whether it happened while she was painting I didn’t know, but the inside of her room was splattered with yellow paint. I felt a brief moment of relief knowing she wasn’t hurt or in danger, but then the young lady muttered with an embarrassed expression.

‘Now what do I do? I was planning to paint the sunset but I have no paint.’

When I saw the troubled young lady with her hand to her cheek, I couldn’t think of anything. There was just one thing I was certain of: A beauty was in trouble and that beauty was the lady I’m supposed to be taking care of.

So I said what anyone would have said in that situation.

‘I’ll go buy some more.’

‘Oh my. Really?’

When I saw the young lady smile in my direction I felt a certain fulfillment, as if I achieved everything in the world.

Gosh, beauty will save the world. That’s a fact.

But my happy feelings were cut short there.

‘Then would you pay a visit to the store tomorrow? Graham knows the shop I frequent. You can go together.’

‘… I’m sorry?’

‘Take care of Lydel, Graham.’

… Because of that, I was now here with Graham on my first outing as a maid of the estate. I looked out the window again with a sullen look.

It had been a while since I last took a carriage downtown wearing civilian’s clothes. Foretelling the coming of summer, the day was bright and clear, and a nice breeze blew through that could put anyone in a good mood.

But Graham’s presence was strong enough to throw all those thoughts out the window.

For a while now, Graham had been sitting with his eyes closed as if he was asleep. But seeing as his posture wasn’t at all disrupted during the ride, even a fool could tell that he wasn’t actually sleeping.

It was awkward. Awkward I tell you!

Being stuck in this small carriage with just the two of us, I began to miss the large mansion.

At least in the mansion I had room to breathe. Now I felt as if I’d die by suffocation if I didn’t consciously breathe in and out.

Fortunately, the carriage stopped before that could happen.

“We’re here.”

Graham muttered lowly as the carriage came to a halt.

See? I knew he wasn’t sleeping.

The horseman opened the door to the carriage and Graham jumped out first. As I was about to follow him out, I saw him standing by the door.

“…?”

Wondering what he was up to I raised my head and saw his gloved hand holding the door.

I thought I saw something wrong at first. But even after I blinked and looked again, the scene didn’t change.

Graham was standing to one side and holding the door.

… What is this?

Could it be he’s being considerate so the door doesn’t close on me as I come out?

“Come out.”

If Graham hadn’t said anything, who knows how long I would have stayed frozen staring at the door.

Coming back to my senses, I hurriedly lowered my head so that I didn’t see his face.

I felt sorry towards Graham, who was only being considerate, but I couldn’t help it. We’ll continue to see each other in the future. If I didn’t want to freeze every time I saw him, it was best if I didn’t see that face.

In the end, the real problem wasn’t Graham, but his face. As long as I didn’t see it I could manage.

It may have seemed impolite, but since Graham wasn’t the emperor, he wouldn’t pull out Strenger and hurt me just because I was rude.

Luckily, Graham didn’t say anything until I got off. I carefully got out of the carriage and sighed in relief at the thought of passing this crisis safely.

“The road around here gets quite busy so follow me carefully.”

“Yes.”

Wow, are you really Lydel?

In the beginning, all I would do is get dizzy and sweaty. Now that I’ve seen him so often these past few days, I seem to have gotten accustomed to him. I didn’t miss a beat, I didn’t bite my tongue, and even answered promptly.

As expected, humans are pertinent creatures.

Feeling a small sense of pride, I carried a little skip in my step as I followed Graham.

As Graham said, the artist’s alley was incredibly congested. Every street was overflowing with ateliers and supply stores and artists stood by every corner selling their works.

I got a little excited seeing all the different tools of unknown purposes and canvases of various sizes.

This was all stuff I was seeing for the first time, even before my return. I busily turned my head here and there, browsing while making sure I didn’t lose Graham.

“Graham?”

I turned to look forward at the sudden voice.

A middle-aged man, handing out blank canvases in front of a store, stood waving warmly to Graham.

I could tell intuitively that this person was Mr. Divan, the owner of the shop the young lady frequented. Even if he didn’t act as if he knew Graham, the supply store he ran looked luxurious at a glance.

“What are you doing here so early?”

“We have a bit of a shortage. Is there anything you can prepare for me today?”

“Let’s see here…”

Graham handed a small list to Divan. Divan’s gray eyes narrowed as he scanned the list and nodded. As he did, he suddenly noticed me standing behind Graham.

“By the way, who’s this young lady?”

“She’s the miss’s lady’s maid. You’ll be seeing her often so remember her well.”

“Hoho, she’s a very cute lady. What’s your name?”

“My name is Lydel Cross.”

I replied clearly and bowed my head. As I did so, Divan gave a subtle smirk and glanced at Graham.

It’s not like I didn’t know what that glance meant, but any interest Graham and I had in each other wasn’t any bigger than an ant.

Divan seemed to understand the mood when he saw neither of us blush, simply motioning to Graham.

“Come inside. Even if you don’t find everything, it’s best if you see and decide for yourself.”

“Alright.”

The store I followed Graham into was incredibly big, but because of how much stuff there was, there wasn’t actually a lot of free space. However Graham, as if he was used to it, spoke in a low voice with Divan about something I didn’t understand, and headed up to the 2nd floor.

In the meantime I stood by the counter, looking around at all the merchandise.

Maybe it was because this store was rather prestigious, but there were a lot of interesting things.

As I frantically looked around at stuff like brushes made of marten fur, cotton canvases, and different papers stacked by size and type, I found myself going further inside the shop.

Several shelves were stacked on top of each other; I couldn’t even see this side from the counter. I was about to head back, thinking I might get lost inside the store if I misstepped, when…

“T-This place is a little…”

“Aww, how cute. Hoho, don’t worry. It’s not like we’re doing anything bad.”

… What’s going on here?

I stopped at the sound of a rather sensitive conversation deep inside the store. I could faintly hear short gasps of breath and the sound of shuffling clothes mixed with the conversation.

“M-ma’am, wait…”

“Noo, not ma’am. I told you to call me Rose.”

After listening a bit, this- wasn’t this a bit of a dangerous situation?

Without a second thought I began stomping loudly around the shelves. I also didn’t forget to talk out loud to myself, making sure that they could hear me.

“Let’s see, where’s the paint the young lady was looking for…”

“…”

As I expected, the subtle whispering I heard inside suddenly stopped. Then a moment later, I heard a rustling sound and watched as a lady in a pink dress ran out the store from the other side of the shelf.

Phew, another day another dollar. Feeling some sense of pride, I was about to return to the counter when someone called out to me.

“E-Excuse me, lady.”

“?”

I turned to see a man, who appeared to be the lady’s victim, standing there.

Because the store was dark I couldn’t really see his face. There was nothing else I could tell about him other than the fact that he was tall and his voice was soft.

“Me?”

“T-Thank you.”

All of a sudden the man bowed his head. At that moment, I was able to slightly see the hem of his unbuttoned shirt.

Ah, so he was that lady’s victim.

“Ahh, it’s not like I really did anything. Are you alright?”

“Yes. Nothing bad happened thanks to you.”

The man raised his head and slowly came towards me. My eyes grew wide as I watched him approach.

His curly, cotton candy-like hair was a golden brown. His skin was white and his eyes were slightly droopy, his pupils’ colours a contrasting indigo blue.

From his delicate appearance to his sweet and quiet voice, he truly was the definition of a sensitive artist.

“If you don’t mind, may I know your name?”

“It’s Lydel Cross.”

“Lydel, Cross…”

The man slowly uttered my name and grinned.

Wow. This person- he looks like a super large dog when he smiles. It’s so cute!

“My name’s Lloyd Bernstein. It’s embarrassing to say, but I’m an artist.”

“An artist, I see. I work as a maid at Count Stingers’ estate.”

“Stingers…?”

As I thought, the bad reputation around the name, Stingers, was strong.

I offered a bitter smile as Lloyd’s face stiffened.

“It’s actually not that bad. The work isn’t too hard either.”

… Minus having to seduce Graham, that is.

I let out an awkward laugh as I thought that to myself. Even Lloyd, who seemed a bit fearful after hearing the Stingers name, followed suit and laughed.

As if he suddenly remembered, he reached to loosen the ribbon tied in his hair. The ribbon was a golden colour that greatly complimented his hair colour.

I watched a bit as Lloyd’s hands moved this way and that, folding and tying the ribbon. A moment later, a small rose, made from the ribbon, sat perfectly on the palm of his hand.

As expected of someone who said they were an artist, his dexterity wasn’t a joke. As I looked towards Lloyd in admiration, he, with a happy expression, offered the rose to me.

“It’s a thank you for helping me out.”

“But I didn’t really do anything…”

“It’s because I’m grateful. Please take it, Lydel.”

Lloyd gently pushed the rose into my hand. I wasn’t sure how securely he tied the knot, but the rose didn’t unravel even when it was moved to my hand.

“In that case… Thank you.”

It felt rude to refuse since he went to this length, so I eventually stuck the rose into my vest breast pocket.

Lloyd nodded with what looked like a rather content expression.

“It suits you. You look very pretty.”

“…”

I went slightly red at the sudden compliment.

Look at this guy. How could you make that kind of comment with that innocent, unknowing, face?

I think I can understand why that lady earlier liked Lloyd so much. Even if he had no ulterior motives, if you make comments like that any average girl would misunderstand!

Just as I was about to comment on it I heard Divan’s voice from the 2nd floor.

“Lloyd, you’re still here?”

“I’m leaving now. Well then, Lydel. I’ll see you again.”

As he waved his hand like an excited puppy, Lloyd left the store. His back seemed so sunny and bright that I ended up smiling without realising.

How cute.

At most, Lloyd seemed to be around 22, 23 years old. Even if I came back to when I was 18, my original age was 28.

Geez. Even if you act that sweet, all you are is cute to me.

I watched him happily, like a grandmother watching her grandchild, when I felt a piercing gaze at the back of my head and turned to look.

And when I saw those purple eyes staring at me, I froze.

Chapter 7

“Who is that?”

I swallowed nervously and turned blue when I saw his gaze, an expression that looked as if he would kill me if I didn’t respond.

The change in Graham’s expression wasn’t drastic, but just by seeing the shortened distance between his brows, I was able to tell. Right now, Graham was in a bad mood.

How could I not tell?

I’ve seen that bad tempered, uncomfortable expression continuously for 10 years.

Those slightly narrowed eyes and furrowed brows. It was exactly, exactly, like the emperor’s just before he pulled out Strenger.

My insides twisted again. This time I heard a ringing in my ears rather than feel nauseous.

I thought I had gotten used to it, but it looked like that wasn’t the case.

I have to say something. An excuse, anything! Please, just open your mouth, Lydel!

But, as if someone had come and poured a bucket of glue all over it, my mouth remained shut. Graham’s brows furrowed further as he looked at my unresponsive self, when an unexpected saviour appeared.

“His name’s Lloyd, an artist who lives over on Foote Street. It hasn’t been too long since he came here from the capital, so I doubt you would know him, Graham.”

Graham’s attention turned to Divan. Once I was released from his gaze I felt I had finally gotten some room to breathe.

“Lloyd?”

“Yes. Says he was quite famous while in the capital. I’ve seen his work a couple of times myself. They all look as delicate as him. Have a look.”

Divan pointed towards a painting hanging in the air, waiting for it’s paint to dry.

As I turned my head in the direction of his finger, I recognized immediately who the lady in the picture was.

It was clearly the woman who had been troubling Lloyd earlier. Even though it was a still life, the portrait was detailed and finely crafted, unmistakably comparable to the real thing.

I felt like I could understand how Lloyd was able to become so famous in the capital.

“… It is quite exquisite.”

“Isn’t it? With portraits of that level, he has no problem making a living among women who willingly spend their money to support him.”

Graham nodded dryly, as if he had already lost interest in Lloyd. He began to compare the items in the basket with his list one by one. Once he finished Graham signed the ledger, marking the end of our errand.

After that, everything was exactly the same as when we came.

Besides the fact that I held the basket full of paint and art supplies, Graham and I didn’t say a word to each other.

Ah. There was one thing.

When we finally came back from that infinitely, long ride home, Graham got out of the carriage first. I was about to do the same and follow him out when I saw him extending his hand towards me at the door, causing me to stop.

His white gloved hand was steady in my direction.

“…?”

I looked at his hand with a confused expression.

Ah, of course I’m not an idiot. I knew very well what it meant to step out and extend your hand inside the carriage.

It was manners, etiquette, an escort; a gesture that a gentleman usually offered to a lady. But why was Graham doing that to me? Why? For what reason?

“Come out.”

I couldn’t understand the meaning behind Graham’s hand until he, who couldn’t wait any longer, pressed me. The moment I heard his voice I had a flash of realisation.

Right! It must be that!

I hurriedly grabbed the errands basket I took into the carriage and gave it to him, not forgetting to neatly place the handle in his hand.

“…”

One eye slightly narrowed, but Graham otherwise said nothing as he took the basket.

Now that all my errands are finished, shall I head back?

I hopped out of the carriage with a light heart and was about to head off to the servant’s quarters to get dressed when Graham suddenly stopped me.

“Lydel Cross.”

“Yeheck!”

Ah, I bit my tongue again. This time I could smell a metallic hint of iron. I must have bit too hard.

Tears welled up in my eyes, but I couldn’t show that to Graham. Covering my mouth, I carefully turned my head. Of course, my gaze was to the ground.

For a moment Graham stood silently with the basket in hand.

“Why…”

His voice was so quiet I couldn’t hear what he said after that. But, as if he didn’t expect an answer, Graham turned around and made his way back to the mansion.

I wonder what he wanted to say?

I was a little curious, but I decided to head back to my room for now.

Just because I knew what he wanted to say didn’t mean anything would change. I finished all my work. And above all, my tongue was in a lot of pain.

As Graham walked across the third floor corridor he abruptly stopped in his tracks. His eyes turned downward, a vacant look on his face, as he looked at the basket in his hand.

A considerable amount of time passed as Graham stood looking at the basket, unmoving. All of Graham’s complicated feelings compressed in that stare.

Right up until they left the estate, everything went as Graham had planned.

In order to find out why Lydel approached Milena and why she was so terrified of Graham, he thought it might be a good idea to create a more private setting. Since she would obviously hide her true intentions if Milena or Ms. Maymore were around.

However, the ambitious plan he had prepared began to go awry as soon as he got off the carriage.

Graham knew Lydel was afraid of him, but he didn’t think she would be uncomfortable with even basic etiquette.

The actions Lydel portrayed were disrespectful, but rather than associating that with her having no manners, Graham felt strongly that it was that she didn’t want to interact with him.

By the time the shock of being rejected had subsided, they had already arrived at the store.

It was while they were at the store that Graham realised a new possibility, that Lydel might have a phobia of men.

Taking Lydel’s actions into consideration thus far, it was the most plausible theory.

Whenever he passed by her, Lydel was always with the female servants. Not once did he think he saw her talking and laughing with the male servants.

If the count took advantage of that trait to appoint Lydel to Milena, it was a reasonable choice.

Lydel would probably be uncomfortable working with Graham. And if the lady’s maid was uncomfortable, even if he was the butler, he would have to give up his place.

But the Lydel he saw at the supply store wasn’t like that at all!

Lydel was probably unaware, but while he was talking with Divan on the second floor, he kept his eyes on her.

Not only was Divan’s store large, but the materials there were also of the highest quality. If Lydel accidentally touched something and caused damage, then it would be a problem.

But in the brief moment he took his eyes off of her, Lydel had disappeared from the counter.

She wasn’t a child so it was unlikely that she was going around touching this and that. But as he rushed down, what else did he find but Lydel striking an amicable conversation with a good-looking man?

On top of that, someone she had just met!

“…”

Graham’s grip tightened, his furrowed brows clearly showing his uncomfortable feeling.

It was the first time.

The first time he had seen Lydel genuinely smile.

There was no sign of tension or discomfort in her green eyes that peeked through her characteristic, coral hair. When he saw her comfortable gaze and the corners of her mouth pull involuntarily, Graham felt an odd sense of betrayal.

Whenever he saw Lydel she was either stiff or anxious. Even when she smiled in front of Milena, it was awkward enough that it was pitiful to see when standing next to her.

But, with the painter she met for the first time today, she was completely relaxed and smiling brightly.

“But then…”

Even though she was smiling like that, why was it that as soon as he called her she would go blue and start shaking. He didn’t have some kind of contagious disease. Even if it was Graham, he was hurt by the fact she was practically screaming ‘I hate you’ right in front of him.

“… Haah.”

Graham sighed and rubbed his forehead.

Putting the basket in his hand while he offered to escort, covering her mouth like she was about to throw up as soon as he called her; seeing that told him everything he needed to know.

He wasn’t sure what made Lydel avoid him that badly, but there was one thing that was certain.

Lydel Cross didn’t like Graham. Not as a man, nor as a person.

In many ways it was a fractured conclusion.

It was a predictable result, and on the contrary, this was better for Graham.

But…

“… But why?”

A person could hate another person for no reason. It rarely happened but it was possible he wasn’t her type. But in Lydel’s case, her reactions were too ambiguous.

She distanced herself from Graham more than necessary to say that she approached him with a purpose. And if it was because she really didn’t like Graham, then there was no reason for Lydel to stay as a lady’s maid.

“… I might go crazy.”

‘Let’s watch over her for now.’

Graham sighed deeply, recalling Milena’s words. As he headed towards Milena’s room again, Graham’s steps bore a weight heavier than ever before.

I curled up in my sleep from the cold air rushing in.

Even though it was early summer, I must have left the window open seeing as it was this cold.

Just because the night air was nicer didn’t mean I should sleep with the window open. It was annoying, but if I wanted to get a good night’s sleep I had no choice but to get up.

I rubbed my sleepy eyes and tottered towards the window. As I got close, a strong wind burst into my face, causing me to wake up.

A faint fog, a roaring wind, and a blue sky spread across the distant horizon before my eyes.

My grip involuntarily tightened on the window sill. Tears welled up in my eyes as my knees trembled relentlessly.

‘No…’

It couldn’t be. There was no way.

I was certain I had regressed back to when I was 18. But… But why am I on the 150th floor of the tower right now?

As I looked down at my trembling hands, I saw the sleeves of my baggy robe covering my pale, thin skin, that had not seen any sunlight. The moment I noticed the dried, dark brown bloodstains at the end of my sleeves, I fell on the spot.

Was it all a dream? Everything was… In the end…

My vision went blurry.

In the end, unable to bear their own weight, my tears fell to the floor leaving behind wet stains.

‘You’re finally back.’

My stomach dropped at the sound of the sudden voice. I didn’t want to look back, but knowing all too well what would happen if I disobeyed, my body reacted before my head could process the situation.

As I stiffly turned around, the emperor’s robe, woven with golden thread, came into vision. With relaxed, folded arms, he looked at me, sighing as if he was troubled.

‘I was certain I had told you in great detail what would happen if you disobeyed.’

‘Y-y-your Majesty, p-please forgive-’

I knelt down, not knowing what I was asking forgiveness for. However, the emperor wordlessly beckoned to the knights standing behind him.

In my experience that was never a good sign. I didn’t know what, but something terrible was about to happen.

And my ominous premonitions were never wrong.

‘L-Lydel…’

‘Mom!’

It was my mom who I hadn’t seen since being locked away in the tower. She wasn’t the mom I saw when I regressed, but a changed, frightful, and dread-ridden person, dragged and knelt before the emperor.

‘Mom! No!’

‘Lady Cross.’

As the emperor called to me, his hand reached for the hilt of his sword.

I could do nothing but stare at the blood-crazed demon sword in despair as it was drawn out of its scabbard. Even after soaking in so much blood, the Strenger was terrifyingly beautiful.

‘Let me offer you a chance to prove your filial love!’

‘L-Lydel…’

‘How nice would it be if you were able to block Strenger this time.’

As soon as he finished the emperor slashed his sword at my mom’s nape without hesitation, his expression not changing once.

‘NO!’

I cast a barrier. The strongest, most powerful barrier I could make at that moment.

I was sure I cast a barrier, but once again, it was shattered by Strenger’s blade.

‘AAAAAAAAHH!’

As a fountain of blood poured out into the narrow, stony room with my mother’s screams, I opened my eyes again.

Chapter 8

“… Hah, haaah.”

At first I wasn’t able to tell what was what. As everything that was in front of me disappeared, I saw the faintly lit ceiling of my room.

It was only after some time passed that I was able to believe that I was a lowly maid that worked at Count Stingers’ estate.

It was a dream. All of it.

“Hah… Haah… Ugh…”

Once I finally felt safe my tears began flowing without stop, but I had no more strength in my body to wipe them away.

My body felt heavy, like cotton dunked in water. I wanted to go back to sleep, but the fear of seeing the emperor in my dreams again prevented me from doing so.

All I could do was mindlessly stare up at the ceiling and let my tears fall. As I watched the faint, blue light of the ceiling gradually brighten, I once again made up my mind.

Whatever happened, don’t let my magic get caught. Whether it was in the past, present, or future, even if it was in order to protect myself, I would never use magic.

… Is what I said. But less than three days after I made that resolution, I stood again at the crossroads of a grave fate.

“-del. Lydel?”

“Ah, yes!”

My face flushed following my delayed reply. The young lady looked at me quizzically and asked.

“What were you thinking about so deeply?”

“My apologies.”

No one would object to the dismissal of a lady’s maid when her attention wasn’t on the lady she was supposed to be preparing for an outing. In this situation, it was best to just apologize rather than make an excuse.

Thankfully, the young lady didn’t seem to care too much about my mistake. She simply looked at me before shrugging her shoulders and pointed to the jewelry box.

“Aquamarine, if you will.”

As I was about to grab the ring from the jewelry box, I paused.

Since the young lady is wearing a light blue dress today, wouldn’t it be better to give her a rich blue accent?

I think a matching ribbon and ring colour would complement the violet colour of her hair when she flips it. After pondering over it for a moment, I pulled out a sapphire ring instead of a sky blue aquamarine.

“Sapphire?”

“I thought it would complement you well if you wore it with this ribbon.”

Her eyes went wide at my proposal. As those aqua-coloured eyes, the same colour as her dress, looked at me, I felt a little embarrassed.

“If it isn’t to your tastes…”

“No, it’s fine. Let’s do that.”

As she said that the young lady turned back to face the mirror. I let out an inner sigh of relief. I put the ring on her finger and started brushing out her hair.

While I carefully brushed her hair out and applied perfumed oils, the young lady gazed at the ring on her hand.

Her beautiful, fairy-like eyes were gently subdued. I didn’t know what she was thinking, but fortunately there didn’t seem to be any sign of displeasure in her eyes.

“There’s something I want to ask you, Lydel.”

“Yes?”

The young lady raised her head as if she remembered something and pointed to the hem of her dress with a smile.

“This appliqué, is it your handiwork?”

She pointed out a blue rose appliqué embroidered with ribbon. It was the thing I had mended yesterday evening.

Hm, did she not like it? I thought it looked rather plain if I simply mended it so I decorated it with a ribbon, but…

“Yes, that was my work.”

“… It’s very nice. You’re quite good at sewing.”

The young lady smiled brightly while handing me a compliment. Her smile was so dazzling it seemed as if there was a brief halo shining above her. I felt like my brain would melt a little as a spontaneous smile pulled at my lips.

Wow. What should I do? I- I just got complimented by a beauty.

“Thank you very much.”

“It’s a good thing you’re here, Lydel. Graham’s absolutely hopeless when it comes to needlework.”

“… Sir Graham is?”

Hearing his name out of nowhere made me break out into a cold sweat.

The name ‘Graham’ was, in the end, only a name, but I felt there was nothing more incompatible than Graham and sewing.

I gave up trying to imagine Graham carefully mending a dress while holding a small needle in his giant hands. No matter how much I tried to imagine him doing it, all that kept coming up was the image of the emperor holding a needle and I felt like I would throw up.

The emperor’s face, that I saw clearly in my dreams a couple days ago, was vividly real. His even voice and refined gestures, his hair, black like a crow, and his face that seemed to be carved from a glacier; when I thought about it again, he looked too much like Graham.

Minus his eyes.

Even though she should have noticed my flustered self, the young lady gave a simple nod.

“Which is why I left any mending to Ms. Maymore for a while. It would take some time, but even the head maid isn’t that good at mending. If there was anything that would end up being a pain to mend, I would just throw that out and buy a new one.”

I gave an awkward smile while dripping sweat.

If one knew how many different kinds of materials and cloth made up the dress of a count’s daughter, anyone would have done the same thing.

Not just top quality fabric, lace, or ribbons; things like strings, buttons, and other similar materials had to be considered when thinking about the composition of a dress. You could only imagine how much the cost of even one dress would be. With that in mind, she would still throw it out just because it couldn’t be mended?!

“T-That’s a relief…”

“What is?”

“That nothing will be thrown out anymore.”

The young lady chuckled and nodded.

“You’re right. It is a pain having to buy new clothes every time. Wearing beautiful dresses is nice, but it’s annoying having to choose new ones.”

I slipped into my thoughts while braiding her hair.

This might be overstepping my bounds, but this much should be fine because I’m the lady’s maid, right?

“If… If you’re alright with me, I’ll help you choose one out next time.”

“… Hm?”

Whether it was because she didn’t expect what I was going to say, her eyes widened as she looked at me through the mirror.

Ah, did I go too far?

However, the young lady’s face seemed more amused than it did displeased.

“You want to choose a dress together?”

“T-That’s… Of course, since you are already beautiful, miss, I’m sure everything looks beautiful on you. I just thought it might be easier to choose if there was an objective opinion…”

I didn’t even know what I was saying. I was so flustered my head began to spin.

Although everything I said came out as gibberish, the young lady looked at me with a smile.

“Thanks. In that case, next time I choose a dress I’ll be indebted to you.”

“I-Indebted- No, not at all. If I can help with even this much…”

The young lady just smiled at my restless self.

“I’m borrowing your talent so of course I should offer my gratitude.”

“T-Talent…”

I could feel my heart grow warm.

Compared to the past, when I was never recognized despite doing the best that I could, being told that she was grateful for something as simple as helping to choose a dress together made me feel like I was in heaven.

On top of that she called it a talent. A talent! Goodness. She called me, who has no use besides putting up a barrier, talented!

I think I could understand why the count was such a fool for his daughter. Even I would have tried to get rid of a butler of unknown origins if he kept sticking to her by using any means and methods necessary.

“Ah, it’s already this late… Sorry Lydel, but could you work a little faster?”

“Yes!”

I nodded and quickly began tying her hair. Her lavender locks began to take on a new shape as I tied and twisted the soft and healthy strands.

“Ohh, this is beautiful. It’s a little different from what’s currently in style.”

The young lady gazed at her reflection in the mirror.

Of course it would be. What I did right now is a style that will soon come into fashion.

The trends I knew of were what I saw before I was dragged and locked up in the magic tower. This was most likely the only trend I knew about before then.

“I’m glad it pleases you.”

As soon as I said that, the young lady flashed a smile in my direction.

Her violet hair was curled up in the shape of a rose, a blue ribbon flowing mystically in her locks. She seemed just like a blue rose fairy.

“I’m glad you’re here, Lydel.”

Ahh, it’s good to be alive. Actually, should I say instead it’s good that I regressed?

Yup, beautiful things needed to be treated with honour and respect. I felt proud and let warm tears stream down inertly, when a sudden, clean knock cut through my joyful moment.

-Knock knock.

“Miss.”

“Just wait, Graham.”

She stuck her tongue out a little as she checked the time before dropping her voice to a whisper.

“He can just wait in the carriage but he insists on being like this.”

“I-I see.”

I smiled awkwardly and helped put her shoes on. The satin shoes fit snugly against her tiny, silk stocking covered feet.

“Now that you’re here, I’ll have to tell Graham to stick to his original job.”

His original job?

My eyes widened at the unexpected statement.

Graham’s original job? Wasn’t he the estate’s butler? Even though he was supposed to serve the master, wasn’t he next to the young lady because he was her secret lover?

“Graham would always attend to me before. Even though his title is that of a butler, I felt a little sorry that I had to ask him to help me with stuff like this. Now that you’re here, Graham can focus on his work.”

“What kind of work does he do?”

I ended up carelessly blurting out my question.

The young lady and Graham that I had seen up until now seemed to get along quite well. But now, after listening to what she just said, rather than the two of them being lovers…

“Miss.”

“I’m coming, Graham.”

The young lady gave a lively response to the low voice outside the door and stood in front of the mirror. I subconsciously followed and went to stand up. As I did, the young lady smiled and lightly pinched my cheek.

“I’ll be back, Lydel. Help me with my hair again next time.”

“Y-Yes…”

I gave a nod with a half-dazed look as the young lady walked right by me and headed for the door. After a short string of shoes clicking on the floor, the door opened.

“Let’s go, Graham.”

“Yes.”

At the end of his reply the door shut with a bang. Still absentminded up to that point, the sound of the closing door made me come back to my senses a little.

“… Miss?”

I quietly muttered while lightly rubbing my cheek. But in this empty room, there was no response.

Milena stared out the window of the carriage for a while. A light chuckle escaped her lips, as if she had just thought of something amusing.

Graham, who was seated across from her with his arms crossed and eyes closed, opened his eyes at the sound of her laughter. His purple eyes turned down slightly as he stared at a rather amused Milena’s profile.

“You’re probably wondering what I think is so amusing.”

“…”

Graham stayed silent. Milena giggled and turned her gaze towards Graham.

“I was thinking about Lydel.”

“…”

He had expected that answer, but hearing it directly made him feel strange. Graham frowned again while Milena slowly pointed to her hair.

“She did my hair, you know.”

“I see.”

“She also chose this ribbon and ring.”

“… Is that so?”

“Lydel was also the one who put this rose appliqué on my dress.”

“… What is it you’re trying to say?”

Graham’s question was deliberately stiff. Milena gave a mischievous smile.

“I’ve changed my mind.”

“… What are you talking about?”

“Lydel, she’s quite cute. A lot like someone I know.”

Graham’s eyes turned further to the side, looking at Milena. The atmosphere inside the carriage turned cold in an instant, but Milena didn’t care.

“She was sent by the count. It’s best to stay vigilant.”

“I know. She’s cute though, so it’s fine.”

“… Milena.”

“Alright, Graham. Relax.”

Milena chuckled and made a hand motion. The sapphire ring placed on her finger shone in the sun’s rays.

“But that child, she didn’t seem to have any plans.”

“We still don’t know that.”

“You’re right. That’s why I said let’s watch over her a little longer.”

“… Do as you please.”

Graham let out a sigh and closed his eyes again. Milena’s giggles continued throughout the ride, but Graham didn’t open his eyes again until the carriage came to a halt.

Chapter 9

After the young lady made her exit, I went back to the dressing room to organize my thoughts. There was nothing better than some sewing when you wanted time alone to think to yourself. I thread the needle and placed the dress that needed mending on my lap before slipping into deep thought.

Everyone at the estate thought the two were lovers. Even the young lady’s father, Count Stingers, thought the same. The two of them always went out together and it was rare to find them apart. Graham would even accompany her on outings that Ms. Maymore was supposed to be assigned to. It would be weirder to believe that the two weren’t romantically related.

But the young lady stated she wanted Graham to return to his ‘original work’. As his employer that may be an obvious statement, but as his lover it was a little strange.

“Could it be…?”

My hands stopped mid-stitch.

The count definitely mentioned that the young lady was the one who brought Graham. Though I wasn’t sure of the situation now, it was evident that she was fond of him back then. However, that was 2 years ago.

Graham who was always by her side.

The young lady’s attitude regarding him.

Her relief that I was here.

“… Is she fed up with him?”

It was a strong possibility. What if the young lady was tired of Graham’s excessive loyalty and stingy attendance and tried to let him go, but Graham was clinging to her saying that wasn’t possible?

I scrunched my nose.

Do I tell the count? If I did then he would be overjoyed and dismiss Graham.

“… Dismiss?”

I tilted my head again.

Even if I didn’t explicitly go to the count, it wasn’t as if the young lady didn’t have the authority to dismiss Graham herself. If she disliked or was fed up with him, she could easily dismiss him and that would be the end of it. But seeing as she hasn’t done anything…

“Does he have some kind of advantage against her?” I muttered absentmindedly before shaking my head.

The emperor was a man who didn’t hesitate to use any methods needed to get the most of what he wanted out of me after locking me up. Using my family or other people’s lives as an advantage against me were as simple to him as breathing.

However, Graham wasn’t the emperor. No matter how similar their faces were, that kind of cowardly act shouldn’t be the same.

“But…”

An image of the young lady’s fair smile beaming in my direction popped up.

‘I’m borrowing your talent so of course I should offer my gratitude.’

My lips pulled into a giddy smile again when I thought about her joy inducing compliment. Then Graham’s face suddenly appeared behind her. He leered at the young lady’s slender shoulders and body with a sly smile. The poor young lady continued smiling at me, unaware of who was behind her. All at once, two large arms stretched out from behind and grabbed the young lady’s shoulder and waist. The young lady struggled, but Graham easily held onto her and began pulling her away.

“No!”

A scream came out of me without realising and my hands and feet went cold.

I didn’t know why the young lady wasn’t able to dismiss Graham. But no matter what the reason was, I had a duty to protect the lady I attended.

But how? If Graham took the young lady out like he did today then there’s no way I could…

“… Ah.”

… There was.

Just one. A method to protect the young lady.

I slowly turned my head down and looked at my hands. The young lady said I was talented, but there was one thing I was truly gifted with.

However, that had no correlation with my pursuit of a peaceful maid life. I mean, it was only three days ago that I resolved to never use magic again.

That’s right. There was no reason for me to use magic. Let’s think of another way to protect the young lady.

“……… No.”

As soon as I imagined Graham’s sly smile as he embraced her, I broke out into a cold sweat and my hands and feet went cold again.

That wouldn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen… But…

I lifted my head and the door to the young lady’s room came into my line of sight. My eyes fixated on the shut door for a moment.

Eventually I came to a conclusion.

The young lady returned that evening past sunset. I hurriedly ran to the door to retrieve her bag and parasol after impatiently waiting for her return.

“Oh my! Lydel? Were you waiting for me?” The young lady asked in a surprised tone as she entered the room with Graham, following closely behind. I nodded while being careful to not meet his eyes.

“I am the lady’s maid…”

“Graham helps me in the evening so you don’t need to-”

“No!”

Both the young lady and Graham stared at me after my sudden outburst.

Oops, that was a little strong.

However, the thought of Graham attending to the young lady’s evening needs made shivers run down my spine. That face may look like it held no ulterior motives, but who knew what would happen if the two were left alone!

“S-Sir Graham should also take a rest.”

“So she says, Graham?” The young lady asked in a rather amused tone. She turned to face him but the butler remained silent.

Even though I held my head down I could feel Graham’s gaze piercing the top of my head.

“… Do as you please, miss.”

“Hmm.”

The young lady hummed as she looked back and forth between me and Graham. She then took a step towards me and flashed a bright smile his way.

“Good work today, Graham. I’ll leave the rest up to Lydel now.”

“…”

I could sense that Graham was looking at me, but so long as the young lady chose me there was nothing he could do.

Take that! This is what you call lady’s maid privilege!

I shouted the statement in my mind and promptly followed the young lady upstairs. Once we were halfway up I plucked up the courage to look behind me. Graham was still in the same position as when he entered, his eyes watching us as we went up.

“Ahhh, I’m tired.”

The young lady ran and plopped right down onto her bed. That act of falling into bed would normally be unfathomable for a young countess, but she was also human. Any person would do that if they were tired.

“You need to get changed, miss.”

“Ngh…”

The young lady groaned and stood up. I hurriedly undid the buttons and ribbons on her dress before slipping it off her body and replacing it with a silk gown. I took a deep breath.

It’s ok. Everything will be fine. Don’t worry so much.

“I’ve prepared your bath. Would you like to go in?”

“Yeah.” The young lady gave an elated response and headed to the washroom.

Alright. So far everything is going as planned.

The sweet smell of jasmine rose from the petals in the water. A deep sigh left the young lady’s lips as she soaked her body in the bath and leaned her head back. I quickly took out the ribbon and pins in her hair, letting her long, flowing hair dip into the water.

“Ahh, that hits the spot…”

“How is the temperature?”

“It’s perfect.”

The young lady grinned and closed her eyes.

Now!

The moment she shut her eyes, I stuck my hand in the water to pretend to check the temperature and quickly released my magic. A white, magical energy shone briefly from my fingertips and soon spread throughout the water, enveloping the young lady’s body. The light spread across her face and hair, seemingly glowing gold wherever there was water, before disappearing entirely.

Even when the light faded the young lady didn’t open her eyes. She shouldn’t have felt anything so that was to be expected, but I couldn’t calm down until everything was done. I continued to attend to the young lady’s bath and prepare her for bed, all while pretending nothing happened. Once the young lady changed into her negligée and buried herself in her blanket, I turned off the lights and left her room.

Finally it was over.

I did everything that I could. Now that she had a barrier around her body, Graham would literally be unable to touch even a single strand of her hair.

Just as I closed the door and breathed a shallow sigh of relief…

“Is she asleep?”

“WAAAAAAH!”

T-That scared me!

My legs gave in from the sudden voice. I looked into the darkened hallway at the source with wide eyes. Graham emerged from the shadows and slowly approached me.

What the- What are you doing here? Are you actually the young lady’s stalker?!

There were a million things I wanted to say but I stayed silent. As I opened my mouth slightly, Graham came and stood in front of me. My shoulders flinched in an automatic response, but Graham did nothing but stand there quietly.

“It wasn’t my intention to surprise you…”

Even if that’s the case, isn’t it common sense to apologise in this situation? I grumbled inwardly. I was about to twitch my lips in annoyance when Graham suddenly spoke up.

“Sorry.”

“…”

Well now, if you just apologise right after I said that, it makes me look like the bad guy.

Suddenly feeling apologetic I raised my head slightly. Graham was still looking this way, but it was hard to see his face in the dark.

Who knew how much not being able to his face would put my mind at ease?

Just as I found the courage to tell him it was ok, Graham cautiously held out his hand.

“…?”

You- What are you doing?

I carefully looked at Graham and his hand and felt a strange sense of déjà vu.

I feel like I had seen this scene before. Ah, right. It was when I got off the carriage.

Back then he put his hand out because he wanted the basket. But what does he want now?

“Are you alright?” Graham asked quietly.

That’s when I realised the meaning behind his outstretched hand.

So it was meant to help me up because I fell down in surprise because of him. Wait- but do I have to grab his hand?

Were it anyone else I would have taken the hand without a second thought. But whenever Graham was the other party my brain would overload. Time kept ticking as I continued to stare absentmindedly at his hand. Even if he had the face of the emperor, it must be embarrassing to make him hold his hand out for such a long time.

I took a deep breath. As I was about to reach out, Graham suddenly withdrew his hand.

“Oh, right…” Graham mumbled quietly as if he had realised something. I involuntarily raised my head and stiffened from what I saw.

He still had the same face and voice as the emperor. Even if it was dark, it didn’t mean that face had gone anywhere.

However, not once had I seen the emperor make that sad of an expression before.

“Sorry. That was… Thoughtless of me…”

I wasn’t sure what that meant exactly, but I could understand that he felt genuinely apologetic towards me.

Graham pulled his hand away and took a couple steps back. The haziness made it easier to look at his face. I watched him as he hid in the shadows.

His voice and appearance were identical to the emperor, but his attitude and expressions were completely different.

“There was an urgent request for an approval so I only came to check if the young lady was asleep.”

“Oh…”

“Based on that reaction it looks like I’ll have to get that tomorrow morning.” Graham muttered sadly and checked the time on his pocket watch. It wasn’t that late into the night, but it also wasn’t a strange time to go to bed.

Graham turned around feeling he had no reason to be here anymore, his dim back looking a little heavy.

“Well then…”

“W-Wait!”

I knew what I did just now was crazy. I knew how strange it must be to suddenly call out to the person I’ve spent all this time avoiding.

But I needed confirmation.

Graham turned back slightly to the sound of my voice. His narrow, purple eyes were mixed with surprise and curiosity.

What do I do? I called out to him but I don’t have anything in particular to say. What would be the most natural thing to say in this situation?

“Have a… good night.”

“…”

Graham’s expression was vacant as he looked my way.

That’s when I realised.

The eyes looking at me were violet.

Not a cold, emotionless blue. But a vibrant violet filled with bitterness, surprise, wonder, and curiosity.

“… I think I know why the young lady is so fond of you.”

Graham’s voice echoed softly in the corridor. But strangely, this time, my stomach wasn’t upset. The faint glow of the moon shone through the gloomy darkness of the hallway. As the light illuminated his face, what I saw made me go numb.

“Good night.”

Graham was… Smiling.

Chapter 10

I was in an odd state of mind when I headed back to my room.

When I broke out of my trance and came back to reality, I found myself already seated on my bed in the servant’s quarters. Seeing as the moon was already high up in the sky, it was evident I had been sitting there for a while.

It couldn’t be helped. If my thoughts drifted for even a little bit, the sound of Graham’s voice pulled me right back.

‘Good night.’

It was a gentle greeting, one I never heard come out of the emperor’s mouth before.

Of course, the emperor had no reason to utter those words to me. His visits would always be in the late afternoon. Even on the rare occasion he came at night, he wasn’t the type of person to wish good things for me in general.

But to hear someone bearing the emperor’s face wish me a good night… Nothing could surprise me anymore.

The emperor resides in the capital of Adelwein, a week’s voyage by carriage. No matter how identical their faces were, Graham wasn’t the emperor.

Besides, he was already different from him in many ways.

Compared to the emperor’s cold, empty blue eyes, Graham’s violet eyes were full of feeling, no matter how faint it was. Unlike the emperor, who judged everything based on immediate gains and losses, Graham was surprisingly patient.

When I remembered his bitter expression illuminated in the moonlight, I felt a pang of guilt.

It wasn’t as though I didn’t have my reasons, but when I thought about it from Graham’s perspective, having to endure my ignorance and being humiliated without knowing the reason, I wanted to go and smack my head against the wall.

Come to think of it, how did I treat Graham up till now?

I turned my head away whenever I saw him, I didn’t make eye contact, never replied, bit my tongue, I covered my mouth like I was going to puke…

“Oh no…”

The more I thought about all the discourtesy I showed Graham, the more I couldn’t forgive myself.

It was like a fog had cleared from my mind.

It was simple. Graham was Graham. Not the emperor.

But because I wasn’t able to come to that realisation, I had been a nuisance to him and to myself.

It wasn’t as if Graham had ever hurt me. Additionally, it wasn’t as if he had been rude to me either. He was always respectful with me ever since the beginning. Even the first time we met, he handed me a handkerchief when he saw me sweati-

“Ah.”

I hurriedly got up and opened the bedside drawer. I plunged my hand into its depths, hearing something rustling as I rummaged my hand around inside.

I managed to pinch and pull out Graham’s handkerchief that had been inside the drawer. It was a plain, white handkerchief, bearing the initials G.S. in black thread in the corner.

I stared down at the handkerchief for a while then let out a deep sigh.

Let’s go to sleep for now. If I see Graham tomorrow that’s when I’ll return the handkerchief. When I do, I’ll apologize for all of my rude actions up until now.

With that in mind I felt I was able to go to bed with a lighter heart than usual.

Who knows? I might even be able to become friends with him. Of course getting used to that face will be difficult, but knowing that Graham was a completely separate person from the emperor, it was at least worth a try.

The thought that I might be able to become friends with Graham put me in a slightly better mood. Even as I lay down and drifted off to sleep, the smile didn’t fade from my face.

However, within my excitement, I failed to remember one, very important thing.

It was early morning, a time when even the servants were still lying in bed. Yet Graham was fully dressed and headed towards Milena’s room.

Even though the sun had just started to peek out, Graham didn’t show a single sign of fatigue. He even seemed to be light on his feet as he made his way through the hallway.

In truth, Graham was in a great mood. Though he wasn’t sure of the reason, he was somehow excited and managed to wake up easier today than usual.

As he walked up a flight of stairs, he looked down at the envelope of papers clutched to his side. The cause of all of Graham’s headaches tucked in a neat bundle. So long as he could get Milena’s approval he could finally get a clue to solving this problem. Graham’s eyes slowly opened and a deep sigh left his lips.

In all honesty, he was supposed to receive her approval yesterday. If Lydel hadn’t suddenly declared her will to attend to Milena, the papers could have been out of Graham’s hands by now.

But Graham didn’t resent her. The good mood he was in now was more influenced by Lydel than it was by the papers in his hands.

The girl he had met last night standing in front of Milena’s room looked, as always, afraid of him. Seeing Lydel with her head bowed and unable to even grasp his outstretched hand, Graham realized he had been unknowingly ignorant again.

If Lydel was afraid of him, the best thing he could do for her was to disappear. But even though he had that knowledge, seeing him offering his hand towards her or obstinately speaking to her could have been seen as, not a consideration, but a cruel joke.

The sound of Lydel’s half-desperate voice, stopping Graham in his tracks as he was heading back after coming to a delayed realisation, still rang in his ears.

‘U-Um!’

And after calling someone out that desperately, the thing that came out of her mouth was…

‘Have a… good night.’

Even though he couldn’t quite see her in the dark, Lydel had plucked up the courage to look in his direction. As she gave her greeting with a trembling voice, Graham, for the first time, was able to meet Lydel’s green eyes head-on.

Ah, I can see her.

If he was being honest, the girl that was looking at him that night was quite cute.

Her clear, green eyes were shaking like a scared fawn, but they never turned away from his. Even though her lips trembled and she looked like she would burst into tears at any moment, she persisted and looked straight at him.

When he saw that face, Graham understood why Milena thought Lydel was cute.

There was no way someone with that kind of desperate expression could be accused of a lie.

Although Graham and Milena were both good at recognizing suspicious people, people who truly had something to hide wouldn’t approach their target while showing such blatant hatred.

Of course, Lydel might be an excellent actress. But if it really was acting, becoming the prima donna in Adelwein’s most famous troupe would have been more suited for her than becoming someone’s spy.

“… Pfft.”

An involuntary grin found its way on his face as he remembered the way those green eyes tried to meet his own.

Her small effort to maintain her composure was both admirable and cute at the same time.

That might have been the reason why.

‘Good night.’

Saying something that he normally never would could have been seen as a reward for Lydel’s courage.

There was a tacit agreement between Milena and Graham to not say anything more than necessary to the other servants at the estate. That wasn’t to say he didn’t like them, but rather nothing good would have come out of putting other people between the two of them.

But he knew even Milena would overlook it this time. With that in mind, Graham stood before Milena’s door.

– Knock knock.

“Come in.”

Despite it being so early in the morning, her response was immediate. Graham promptly opened the door and saw Milena leaning against the bed, flipping through a bunch of papers.

“How did it go?”

Milena asked without so much as a peek in his direction. Graham, as if used to this interaction, simply approached her and showed her the papers.

“Here.”

“Oh! Finally!”

A smile of joy bloomed on Milena’s raised face. Her smile was beautiful enough to make anyone’s heart skip a beat, but Graham’s expression remained unchanged.

“Good work, Graham!”

Although those words were often used in greeting, Graham knew that that was never the case. He simply nodded once and extended the papers again. Even with that cold reaction, Milena could tell that he was quite excited.

“Let’s see…”

Just as Milena reached out to grab the papers from his hands…

– Zzzap!

“Ah!!”

The moment Graham’s fingers touched Milena’s, a stinging pain violently spread from his fingertips.

The papers fell from Graham’s hand and fluttered onto the bed. Milena blinked and watched the fluttering papers fall before asking, “What’s wrong?”.

“That…”

What was that just now?

Graham looked down at his numb wrist with a hardened expression. There was still a lingering sensation from the pain in his skin.

Was it static? No. Milena’s face looked too clueless for that to have been the case.

Alternately looking between his hand and Milena, Graham reached out towards her again.

– Zzzzzap!

“Ugh…”

“Graham?”

He could feel pain strike through his hand again the moment he touched her hand. Even though he quickly let go, the lingering sensation was stronger than before.

Milena’s face hardened as she realised the situation.

“Graham, isn’t this…?!”

“…”

Graham didn’t respond. His cold, hardened purple eyes just stared down at his palm without a word.

Eventually Graham raised his head. His now turbulent eyes looked as if he wouldn’t be bothered even if he killed someone.

“… Milena. You did something after coming back yesterday, didn’t you?”

“I didn’t do anything. I just got changed, took a bath, dried my hair, then went to bed.”

“Did you meet anyone after coming home yesterday?”

“No. I was with Lydel the whole time yester-…”

Milena looked to Graham with a sudden realisation. Graham nodded his head with a grim expression on his face.

Milena had a look of disbelief. But considering the circumstances, there was only one possible answer.

“… Lydel?”

A lady’s maid’s day begins by preparing the young lady’s breakfast.

The young lady’s meal time was at 10am. Two hours before her mealtime was usually enough to do the laundry and prepare her breakfast.

But here I was at 8 am, standing in front of the lady’s room when I should be in the laundry room.

As soon as I got up and ate breakfast, the young lady summoned me.

It was rare for the young lady to wake up so early, but to call me as soon as I got up made me a little nervous.

Did something happen? Did I do something wrong that I don’t know about?

I was just thinking I would be able to get along well with Graham, but the sudden summon was now making me nervous.

However, the important thing was to be calm in situations like this. As I stood before the young lady’s door I relaxed my stiff shoulders and cleared my throat.

– Knock knock

“It’s Lydel, miss.”

“Come in.”

The young lady’s voice sounded no different from usual. It didn’t sound like I was summoned because of any misconduct on my part.

I let out an inert sigh of relief.

Thank goodness. It looks like I won’t be fired just yet.

However, that peace didn’t last long.

The door opened and I raised my head.

“Good morning, Lydel.”

The young lady, with her fairy-like smile, sat on the bed and waved to me. She looked the same as she always did. But as soon as my eyes met Graham’s, who was standing by her bed, I realised why she had summoned me.

‘I’ll have to get her approval tomorrow morning.’

Graham’s quiet mumble from last night resounded clear in my mind. And with that, the recollection of what kind of magic I had cast on the young lady.

“Sorry for calling you so early. There was something I needed to ask you.”

As soon as she finished speaking Graham strode towards me. His eyes were a cold purple as they looked straight at me. It was as if he was a completely different person from yesterday.

Graham, his eyes still trained on me, reached behind me and shut the half-open door.

The resounding thud of the door closing behind me sounded like my death sentence.
